UPJ Civil Student Association Gives Earthquake Resistant Building Workshop
Thursday, December 5, 2024, UPJ Civil Engineering Study Program received a visit from teachers and students of Pahoa High School, Gading Serpong. During the visit, the UPJ Civil Student Association (HMS) had the opportunity to share knowledge about earthquake-resistant building design. The building in question is a 4-story building model made of balsa wood. Pahoa High School students, with the help of mentors, assembled building elements such as columns, beams, and floor plates using glue as a connection tool. All groups managed to complete the building model within 120 minutes. The completed model building was then tested for its performance in carrying earthquake loads. The earthquake load simulation was conducted by vibrating the vibrating test table at a frequency of 0.5 to 3 Hz. At the maximum earthquake load simulation, all building models showed good performance, with no structural failures occurring.
“Through this activity, high school students are introduced to the concept of design and implementation in the world of Civil Engineering, especially high-rise buildings. The vibration test is a real form of harmonic waves that students learn at school,” as stated by Agus Setiawan as the supervising lecturer in this activity.
